This presentation discusses the limits and possibilities of extending the activities related to the identification of gifted children from a successful program for middle-class gifted students to a favela population in São Paulo, Brasil. It presents the results of a quantitative/qualitative research related to the use (or misuse) of traditional evaluation procedures in the identification of poor gifted children, pointing out some aspects that should be carefully analyzed to avoid the consequences of the mere transposition of assessment procedures from one context to other that lead to discrimination and prejudice.
